FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Signs Prohibited in Public Rights-of-Way
DECATUR - The City of Decatur would like to remind residents that signs should not be placed in the public right of way, areas that include but are not limited to public boulevards, sidewalks and medians.
Signs which are placed in the public right-of-way will be removed by city personnel and taken to the Municipal Services Center at 2600 N. Jasper St. where they can be retrieved. When city staff is required to go out and remove signs from public right of ways it takes them away from other necessary work including but not limited to neighborhood cleanups, street and pothole repairs.
The prohibition on signs in the public right of way is not limited to any particular type of sign.
The city’s sign ordinance is very specific as to the number of signs that can be placed on non-public parcels, with the number depending upon the area zoning and the type of sign to be placed. A complete listing of sign requirements and definitions is available using the link below while those interested in the zoning of a particular parcel can visit www.decaturil.gov/maps/digitalatlas.html or call 424-2781.
