City Announces Precautionary Measures
Due to Recent Rains
DECATUR - The City of Decatur is urging residents and recreational users around Lake Decatur and the Sangamon River to use caution on or around the lake due to recent heavy rains.
High volumes of rainwater have washed a moderate amount of debris into the lake. The rainwater and release of excess water from the Lake Decatur dam into the Sangamon River are both producing strong currents that can be significant safety hazards to boaters, fishermen and other users. Dock owners are advised to make sure boats are secure and to remove loose articles stored on their docks.
Depending on the amount of rain received today and tonight, the situation may increase the need for caution. Contact the Lake Office at 424-2837 for updated information throughout the weekend.
To maintain a manageable lake level, the Lake Decatur dam gates were lowered Wednesday to allow excess water to flow into the Sangamon River. Since the lake is not a flood control reservoir, the City has no choice but to release this excess water. The City is releasing approximately 3 billion gallons of water per day. When full, Lake Decatur contains 7.1 billion gallons of water.
