Monument Dedication Honoring African-American Civil War Soldiers Set

DECATUR - The City of Decatur will hold an official dedication ceremony for the African-American Civil War Soldier’s memorial in downtown Decatur at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 1 in the plaza area just west of the new Consociate-Danzig building one block north of Central Park.

The monument was commissioned last year by the Decatur City Council from artist and Decatur native Preston Jackson and recognizes the efforts of an extraordinary group of soldiers who fought and died in defense of emancipation and so that we as Americans may live. The monument stands more than 10 feet tall and is believed to be only the second monument in the United States honoring African-American soldiers who fought in the Civil War.

The monument has been installed in an area of recent growth and development in downtown Decatur, meaning that a significant number of residents and visitors will be able to experience this piece of history.
