Public Encouraged To Attend Garbage Rate Hearing
The City of Decatur will hold a public hearing to gather input on a request by local garbage haulers for a rate increase at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 21 at the Decatur Public Library.
Haulers have requested an increase of just more than 4% in each of the various service categories currently provided which amounts to an average of about 85 cents per month for most residential service and an average of about $2.18 per month for larger housing developments. City ordinance requires that a hearing be held any time there is a request for a garbage rate increase after which the hearing officer will make a recommendation on the request to the Decatur City Council. After the recommendation is made, the City Council will have 45 days to make a decision about the request.
The 12 residential garbage haulers are independent contractors and do not work for the City of Decatur. The city licenses haulers and is responsible for setting the maximum rate level.
Haulers have requested the following rate structure:

| Single Family | 1x per week | $15.70 per month | $16.50 per month |
| Single Family | 2x per week | $18.25 per month | $19.15 per month |
