During the week of June 6 – 10, 2011, 12 firefighters attended a Vehicle & Machinery Operations class that was put on by Richland Community College. The class is a 40 hour class and is recognized by the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshall for certification. The firefighters attended the class on their own time. The class consisted of classroom instruction, demonstrations, and hands-on practical time. Students learned different extrication tools and their capabilities, hazards associated with a vehicle or machinery accident, extrication techniques, and patient treatment, to name a few areas of instruction. The Decatur Fire Department has two primary extrication pumpers and two back-up extrication pumpers that respond to vehicle and machinery accidents.
